Three reasons to take your FULL lunch hour at work

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

It’s all too easy to fall into the habit of regularly working through your lunch hour. In fact, most people wouldn’t dream of taking the full 60 minutes for fear of falling behind on their workload. While spending more time at your desk might seem like it’s working to your advantage, it can actually be rather detrimental for both your personal and professional life. With this in mind, here are three reasons why you should savour every moment of your lunch hour before getting back on with your job.

1. Food

A balanced diet is often the first thing to fly out of the window when you forfeit part of your lunch hour. All of a sudden it becomes preferable to eat quick, on-the-go meals – like processed fast food – even if these aren’t good for your health or weight. Don’t forget, a nutritional meal can prevent you from succumbing to chronic illnesses and obesity. These ailments can also lead to self-confidence issues in many areas of your life.

2. Relaxation

Food aside, your lunch hour is a great opportunity to relax. As you manage stressful situations and high pressure projects during the first half of your day, your lunch hour provides you with the chance to combat these emotions before going back to your desk. This could be by meditation, breathing exercises, or simply just by enjoying a carefree chat with a friend.

3. Recharge

Rest is important to ensure that you’re capable of working at 100%. When you skip lunch (your designated time to rest), you risk becoming tired and burned out. This can lead to you falling short of your own personal expectations – not to mention that other senior members of the team might notice it. With this in mind, be sure to recharge your batteries so that you’ve got a spring in your step by the time you kick-start the second part of your day.
