5 ways to keep your anger under control

Everyone experiences anger from time to time, but if it becomes a consistent and uncontrollable problem, that anger can take a serious toll on your physical and emotional health. The good news is that there are a number of simple and effective strategies for keeping your temper in check. Below are some of the best ways to manage your feelings and get your anger under control.

1. Reframe the incident

When you are angry, it may feel like the whole world is out to get you. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before doing or saying anything you might regret- being confrontational is only going to make the problem worse. Try to see the situation from another point of view, and express your concerns in a calm, collected manner.

2. Cool off

Sometimes a short break is all it takes to keep your emotions from getting the better of you. If you find yourself feeling stressed out or frustrated, don’t be afraid to walk away and calm down before approaching the problem again. Often times, something that seems serious in the heat of the moment may not seem like a big deal after you’ve had a few minutes to cool down.

3. Find an outlet

When you get angry, your body releases a flood of adrenaline and cortisol. Instead of lashing out, use this energy for something productive. Exercise is an excellent way to clear your mind and body, but other hobbies and activities can serve as an outlet, too. Whether it means taking a brisk walk or sitting down with a good book, find a way to let off steam that works for you.

4. Look for patterns

It’s important to recognize and anticipate the people, places, and situations that are likely to trigger your anger. By taking the time to figure out exactly what it is that is making you upset, it becomes possible to make progress. Look at the big picture, and identify the core sources of your anger so that you can communicate about it more clearly.

5. Meet with a Psychologist

The simple truth is that sometimes an anger issue is more than one person can handle alone. Professional therapy provides a safe, judgment-free environment to explore your anger and come up with strategies to keep your temper in check. If you have constant anger issues or bouts of anger that are affecting your work or home life, it may be time to seek the help of a registered psychologist to assist with your health behaviour change.
