Sharing your goals with your partner can help you achieve them

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

We always make our aims for the near year or new starts with the best of intentions. Whether it’s to lose weight or command more authority at work, we make our goals with the expectation that they can – and will – come true. The question is: have you ever considered sharing your goals with your partner?

Professor Peter Gollwitzer of New York University recently determined that people are more likely to see their goals come to fruition if they discuss them with others. In a 2017 study in which 49 psychology students were involved, Gollwitzer found that those who had made their short-term aims public were on track to hit them faster than ones that they’d kept quiet. With this in mind, here are three reasons why you should consider sharing your goals with your partner.

Understanding

You’ll actually be building a heightened sense of understanding between you and your partner if you share your hopes and dreams for the year ahead. This can only strengthen the bond between you both, therefore reducing the chance of any relationship issues disrupting your personal or professional life.

Support

‘No man is an island’ goes the age-old quote by John Donne. While we like to think we can juggle the demands of life alone – such as holding down a busy job and maintaining a healthy lifestyle – we do sometimes need a helping hand. Your partner can actually be a fantastic form of support, especially if they’re in the know about what you’re trying to achieve.

Accountability

It takes great self-discipline to hold yourself to account because you’ll have no one to answer to but yourself if you’ve kept your goals private. On the other hand, there’s a certain level of accountability that comes with sharing your aims. Ultimately, your partner will be there to ask why you’re falling short of your goals and this can be extremely motivational.

Are you ready to share?

Yes, your hopes and dreams may be personal – but there can be a huge benefit to making them public. This can just be with someone you trust, like your partner, or it can be with your friends, family and co-workers.
