Keeping a positive mindset during lockdown

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

After months of lockdown and time spent away from friends and family, it’s normal to feel like a chicken on a battery farm. With the same old routine, it becomes difficult to keep up the motivation to face each day. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Sometimes hitting the refresh button and making some lifestyle changes can alter your mindset.

1. Keep yourself busy

Spending hours in front of the TV is not healthy. Keeping your mind active will keep you motivated and upbeat. Depression is a serious condition and staying indoors facing the same routine day after day can trigger this. Try getting those creative juices flowing, learn a new skill or even a DIY project. The more you keep yourself occupied, the healthier your mind will be. Boredom eating and snacking can also be a problem. A full and varied day will stop the repeated trips to the fridge.

2. Get the blood flowing

Some sort of exercise each day is also a great way to blow those cobwebs away and get the blood flowing. Weight gain while staying at home can be a problem, so whether it’s a jog around the neighbourhood or a brisk country walk, this is guaranteed to have you walking back through the front door feeling revived and refreshed.

3. Get that beauty sleep

A good night’s sleep is crucial to well-being. Allowing your body to reboot overnight will keep a mind healthy. Try getting an early night several times a week; this will have you up early the next day feeling refreshed. For those who like to keep that “Friday feeling”, try setting an alarm during the week. Get up earlier than you would at the weekend and have some daily goals and tasks in place. This will also break the daily routine and boredom. Variety is the spice of life and with this comes a healthy mind which, in turn, keeps the body healthy.

Ultimately, the trick is to avoid boredom and mundane. Keep your days varied and your mind busy and you’ll come out the other side having handled lockdown in a positive mindset.
