How to manage burnout in the digital age

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

Many of us spend our lives juggling a range of tasks. Work and other daily pressures can easily and rapidly lead to emotional burnout. This had been made even more extreme since our phones, laptops and other digital devices keep us living a 24/7 schedule that can prevent rest and relaxation. So, what steps can you take to manage burnout in a busy, vibrant world?

What is emotional burnout?

Emotional burnout often manifests as a sensation of exhaustion in your mental and physical well-being. You may feel entirely drained like you cannot face the world at all. It might be difficult for you to tackle everyday tasks. Emotional burnout can often lead to mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression. You may notice that you lack interest in doing the things you love or spending time with the people around you.

Turn off your phone

For a large percentage of us, our phones become our constant companions. We use them for everything – from managing our diaries to keeping in contact with relatives on the other side of the globe. While they can be an excellent and useful tool, they can also start to control your life. Give yourself healthy breaks from your digital devices to allow yourself the space to recharge your own batteries.

Find a healthy work/life balance

Work and domestic chores are both necessities for a lot of people. However, if you are trying to spread yourself too thin, you can end up burning yourself out. Talk to your partner or work colleagues if you’re experiencing burnout to see if they can lighten the load and help you to recover.

Talk to a therapist

Speaking with an experienced psychologist can give you the understanding and motivation that you need to make lifestyle changes. This could result in significant improvements to your mental health and allow you to learn tools to prevent a repeat of your burnout. Even if you are only in the first stages of experiencing emotional burnout, it can be an excellent idea to contact a psychologist before your condition spirals out of control.
