The psychology of self-confidence: How therapy can help

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

We all suffer from self-confidence issues from time to time. Whether it’s a single moment of being unsure that you can complete something that you tend to do on a daily basis or a lack of confidence to go for a new job role, low self-confidence can be at the heart of major problems. Read on to learn more about self-confidence, and what therapy could do to solve these issues.

What is self-confidence?

Self-confidence, otherwise known as self-esteem, is in essence the opinion we have of ourselves. A low level of self-esteem can cause us to look at ourselves in a more negative light, struggle to have the confidence to take on new challenges, and even cause us to have a less positive outlook of the work around us. This self-esteem is driven by the messages we receive from the world around us, and those which tell us we’re not good enough tend to stay with us for longer. This is the primary cause of low self-esteem.

What can low self-esteem lead to?

Low self-esteem can lead to a lack of confidence in what might have otherwise been everyday tasks. For example, more challenging things that you would typically do at work might be tougher to get started than usual, as your head wants to “play it safe”. The same applies to trying new things. Self-esteem issues can lead to a fear of failure stopping you from trying. All of this can make you act within yourself, limiting you from achieving your full potential.

How can therapy help to resolve this?

When you’re going through therapy to resolve your low self-esteem, one of the first things you do is to combat your negative thinking patterns. It’s by getting into a negative mindset that poor self-esteem is allowed to develop, so combatting this at the source is key to a healthy mindset in the long term. You can also address the roots of your feelings of unworthiness, combatting them to build a healthier state of mind.
