Do you have a good relationship with yourself?

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

There is a lot of advice on how to improve and strengthen your relationships with your friends, family, and partners out there, but there is not as much written about how to have a good relationship with yourself. You are going to be stuck with who you are for your whole life, so it is vital that the relationship you have with yourself is a positive one.

A negative self-relationship can impact all aspects of your life, whether that’s creating relationship issues with other people, body image issues, or simply lacking the motivation to do anything. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can work on how you feel about yourself and adding in certain lifestyle changes can really adjust your perspective and improve your quality of life.

Care for yourself

We all know that life can get busy sometimes and the days rush by filled with tedious tasks that don’t bring you joy or give you a sense of achievement. When it gets like this, make sure to factor in some time to do something that pleases you.

For example, if you’re a busy mother dropping kids off at school, picking them up, working, cooking, and cleaning, you can begin to feel like you’re taking a backseat on your own goals and aspirations. Ask a friend to pick the kids up from school while you get your hair done, or see if you can meet up with a friend for a coffee date. Pencil in the time to do things that fulfil you in life and give you something to be proud of.

Become more aware of your feelings

When you have negative thoughts about yourself, try to be mindful of what causes you to feel that way and address it head-on. Allow yourself to hold that feeling with the understanding that it will pass. Practising gratefulness is a great way to switch your perspective around to a more positive angle as it will help you see the great things about you that you perhaps don’t notice.
