How virtual reality therapy is used to tackle anxiety or fears

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

Virtual reality (VR) might be more commonly associated with the gaming industry but it’s fast becoming an essential part of psychology too. It’s already effectively being used to tackle anxiety and fears in combination with more traditional methods but its applications are set to continue growing.

Using VR therapy works in the same ways as other VR tech, all you need to do is put on a headset and earphones. You’ll then be transported entirely to a virtual reality world that you can interact with. But how does this help with reducing or eliminating the effects of anxiety or fears? Well, there are four core reasons why it’s used and delivers results as part of therapy.

VR allows you to confront problems in a safe virtual reality world

Facing any problem can be a challenge but stepping into a VR world allows you to do just that without the fear of consequences. It’s a simple way to allow you to confront issues personally in a place that’s completely harmless, setting up your confidence to do so in reality.

It exposes you to your fears

If you have a particular fear or phobia, you’re likely to take steps to avoid it as much as possible. While compartmentalising anxieties can help you move carry on with other tasks, it doesn’t tackle the root cause. VR can expose you to fears, removing the fear of the unknown that often holds us back.

It can break down larger fears or phobias into manageable chunks

Sometimes fears or phobias can seem too large to overcome. VR can allow you to focus on just one aspect at a time, effectively breaking down your issues piece by piece.

VR can act as an escape

Virtual reality provides an escape from the real world. The platform can be used as an effective way to gain some relief from concerns, put issues into perspective, and practice techniques that can help manage anxieties and fears/

From my clinic in Harley street, I have been pioneering the use of virtual reality in therapy. From phobias to anxieties, I have found that it can help achieve incredible 90% success rates as part of a full treatment plan, supporting my patients with improving their health.
