Here’s how to beat a bad body image day

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

From time to time body image issues can get the better of all of us, but for some of us, they can lead to more than just feeling a bit glum. It isn’t only women and girls who are affected by body image problems – one study from 2012 found that 80% of men reported having body image issues compared to 75% of women.
Negative body image can cause a plethora of other concerns; at the most extreme end, depression and anxiety. These feelings may be exacerbated by the current coronavirus pandemic, but even on the worst days there are steps you can take to help tackle the problem, here are a few to try out.

1) Be kind to your body

Your body is a miracle – it does incredible things without you even knowing it’s doing them. The best way to overcome body image issues is to think of positive things about your body. Instead of standing in front of the mirror and thinking about what you don’t like, focus on what you do like. Enforcing positive lifestyle changes, like healthy eating and physical activity, can also have a hugely beneficial effect on your mood.

2) Indulge in activities that build self-confidence

Sitting at home alone and indulging in negative perceptions about your body certainly doesn’t help. Even when it seems like the hardest thing to do, pampering yourself by indulging in your favourite activities can help improve your body image issues. Simple activities like taking a luxurious bath, cooking your favourite healthy meal, or meditating can significantly improve your mood.

If possible, try to meet up with friends or family (observing social distancing measures where applicable) who are fun and positive influences – laughter certainly is the best medicine.

3) Don’t compare yourself to others

We are all on our own journey and one person’s successes don’t make you a failure. Comparing yourself against others only serves to perpetuate negative feelings. Consider instead the progress you have made in your journey, and the exciting and positive progress you have yet to make. Just because you fall one day, that doesn’t mean you will the next.
