4 most effective ways to deal with body image issues during uncertain times

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

After months of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, it comes as no surprise that many are experiencing more negative thoughts about their body image. Articles reminding you of how harmful weight gain can be are only heightening your fears, so what can you do to combat this?

Have some self-compassion

The last few months have been challenging for everyone, so try not to tear yourself down. You won’t be the only person who has put on a few extra pounds or let their exercise routine fall by the wayside during the lockdown. While it’s sometimes easier to focus on the parts of your body you don’t like, try not to forget about the things you love! A great way to focus on the positives is to write down everything you like about your body and read over it when you’re feeling down.

Put social media on ‘mute’

Many people spent time comparing themselves to the models and influencers they see on social media, but taking a break can be important for your mental health. Remember that the images you see on your feed are an illusion – people don’t look that good all of the time, nor are their lives as glamorous as they seem. To improve the relationship you have with your body, take a break from the content posted by models and influencers by unfollowing them. Instead, look for accounts which promote body positivity and educate their followers on body image.

Try meditation

While many of us associate the benefits of mediation with stress and anxiety, there are a number of guided meditations available on Youtube which focus on body positivity and self-esteem.

Speak with a psychologist

If your body image issues have really taken a toll on your mental health during lockdown, or you’ve slipped into unhealthy eating and dieting patterns, consider working through your problems with a therapist. They will help you determine what the root of your issue could be.
